About the MIURA 31
One of the most successful racer cruisers from South Africa during this period. Most but not all came from Nebe in South Africa. The deck shape evolved from the flush foredeck of the earlier models, to a more extended (forward) coach roof in later versions (shown here). Interior layouts and other details vary widely.
Designed by Oswald Berkemeyer and built by Nebe Boatbuilders (SA), the Miura 31 is a robust South African cruiser with a production run of 250 hulls starting in 1978. Its heavy displacement of 10700.0 lb and high D/L ratio of 217.6 reflect a design philosophy prioritizing stability and seakeeping over speed.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and those seeking a heavy, stable platform for moderate offshore passages who prioritize comfort and safety over high-performance sailing metrics.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 1.82 and a fin keel configuration, the Miura 31 demonstrates strong inherent stability and offshore suitability, though its age requires rigorous mechanical maintenance to ensure reliability on extended passages.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other heavy-displacement South African designs from the late 1970s, such as the Cape Dory 30 or similar Nebe-built vessels, due to its similar beam of 10.0 ft and focus on motion comfort indicated by a comfort ratio of 26.64.
