About the HANS CHRISTIAN 38T

Three versions of the HC 38 were produced though basic dimensions were similar. This version, was designated the 'Traditional Cutter' or HANS CHRISTIAN 38T. Another version, usually referred to as the HANS CHRISTIAN 38 MKII (introduced in 1978 and built at another yard), has a slightly different hull shape, rig and interior. A few of both versions were delivered with a ketch rig. A new underbody (with separate rudder on skeg) called the 'telstar keel' was introduced in 1984. (Available on HC 38T only.) See HANS CHRISTIAN 38T (TELSTAR KEEL) Altogether, it is thought that around 210 HANS CHRISTIAN 38s were built. Thanks to Steve Cleary for providing corrections.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Hans Christian 38T is a robust cutter designed by Harwood Ives and built by Anderson Yachts Ltd. (TAIWAN) from 1976–1989. With a displacement of 26500.0 lb and a full/long keel, this vessel is engineered for stability and offshore endurance rather than high-speed planing.

Best for:
This boat is ideally suited for serious bluewater cruisers and coastal explorers who prioritize seakeeping and safety over speed. Its heavy displacement and cutter rig make it particularly well-matched for single-handers or couples seeking a comfortable, stable passage-making platform.
Bluewater capability:
With a D/L ratio of 329.2 and a capsize ratio of 1.66, the Hans Christian 38T is highly capable offshore, offering exceptional stability and motion comfort in heavy weather.
Comparables:
Comparable vessels include the Hallberg-Rassy 38 and the Tartan 38, as they share similar heavy-displacement characteristics and full-keel designs from the same era. These boats are comparable because they all prioritize offshore capability and traditional sailing performance over modern lightweight trends.
