About the ANDREWS 39

Prototype was 'Allegiance', 1st in class and 2nd over all at the 1984 SORC. Tooling was created for production but only one additional boat was built. Thanks to 'SPB' for providing additional information.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Andrews 39 is a rare, high-performance fractional sloop designed by Alan Andrews and built by Dencho Marine in the USA. With only 2 hulls constructed in 1983, this vessel represents a unique, low-production entry in the 1980s performance cruiser market.

Best for:
This boat suits experienced sailors seeking a fast, lightweight racer-cruiser with a high sail area-to-displacement ratio, rather than those prioritizing heavy bluewater comfort or mass-market resale liquidity.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 12700.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 2.13, the boat offers moderate offshore stability, though its low production volume and specific structural vulnerabilities require careful assessment for serious bluewater use.
Comparables:
Comparable to other Alan Andrews designs like the Andrews 31 or 35, as well as contemporary performance sloops such as the O'Day 382 or Catalina 38, due to its fractional rig, fin keel, and emphasis on sailing performance over heavy displacement.
