About the TARTAN 37 (HOOD)
Nearly the same as the earlier BLACK WATCH 37, but with all glass coach roof instead of wood, for easier maintenance. Available also as a keel-centerboarder (Draft: BD:9.33'/2.84m BU: 3.83'/1.17m) Sloop or yawl. The HOOD 37, built by Little Harbor Yachts, is said to be based on the same design. Not to be confused with the S&S designed, TARTAN 37-2, introduced in 1976. See BLACK WATCH 37 for more details.
Designed by Ted Hood and built by Douglas & McLeod in the USA, the Tartan 37 (Hood) is a classic 1965 masthead yawl with a production run of a single year. This heavy-displacement cruiser, weighing 14600.0 lb, is renowned for its robust construction but requires vigilant maintenance of its aging composite structure.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and bluewater adventurers who prioritize seaworthiness and comfort over speed, and who are prepared to undertake significant structural restoration projects.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 14600.0 lb, a capsize ratio of 1.72, and a comfort ratio of 34.01, the Tartan 37 is inherently stable and well-suited for offshore passages, provided its critical structural integrity is verified.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to the Tartan 34 and 42, as well as the Cal 40, due to its similar era, heavy displacement, and emphasis on safe, stable offshore performance rather than racing pedigree.
