About the PRESTIGE 36
S&S design # 2432. (A known as S&S 36. Based on an earlier one-off racing design of 1974.) Prestige Yachts was located at 92 Stirling Highway North Freemantle West Australia 6159 The PRESTIGE 34 was a shortened version of this same design with a winged keel (cast by Swarbrick Bros.). There was also another version called the HOLIDAY 36 built in the Phillipines. Thanks to 'Jules' and a number of others for providing information. Craig Walters worked for Sparkman & Stephens at this time.
The Prestige 36 is a fractional sloop designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Prestige Yachts International (AU) in 1983. With a displacement of 12800.0 lb and a LOA of 35.5 ft, this vessel represents a specific era of Australian production, though the exact total hulls built is not definitively recorded in the source data.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and weekend sailors who prioritize a stable, comfortable ride, evidenced by the high frequency of Princess galley equipment and Webasto heater installations. The prevalence of bow thruster additions (49 mentions) suggests owners value ease of handling in marinas, making it ideal for those who dock frequently.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 1.97 and a D/L ratio of 228.34, the Prestige 36 exhibits moderate offshore capability, suitable for protected coastal passages but requiring caution in heavy open-ocean conditions due to its relatively light displacement for its length.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include other Sparkman & Stephens designs from the early 1980s, such as the Cal 34 or O'Day 35, which share similar fractional sloop rigs and moderate displacement characteristics. The Prestige 36's specific Australian builder context also draws parallels to other local production cruisers of that vintage, though its S&S pedigree aligns it more closely with traditional American designs of the same era.
