About the NEWPORT 41
Cuthbertson & Cassian design #68-5 for Lindsay Plastics. From there, the molds were sold to Capital Yachts, the company that built most NEWPORT 41's until the early 1990's. At some point, a MkII model was introduced that featured a redesigned rudder and coachroof. (The photo above is of a MKII version.) Determining specific dates between one version and another has proved to be difficult. There was also a model called a MIIIA. The dates listed here should be considered less than reliable.
Designed by C&C Design Group and built by Capital Yachts Inc. in 1970, the Newport 41 is a classic heavy-displacement cruiser with a displacement of 17539.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 32.61. While the exact hulls built count is unknown, owner reports highlight significant structural maintenance needs, particularly regarding deck core moisture and compression post rot.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and bluewater adventurers who prioritize seakeeping and comfort over speed, provided they are prepared for extensive structural repairs and modernization.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 1.73 and a D/L ratio of 290.0, the Newport 41 is inherently stable and well-suited for offshore passages, though its age and reported structural issues require rigorous pre-voyage inspection.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other late-60s/early-70s C&C designs like the C&C 40 or 38, as well as heavy-displacement contemporaries like the Tartan 40 or O'Day 40, due to similar fin-keel sloop configurations and cruising-oriented dimensions.
