About the NEWPORT 28-2

Based on the same hull as the NEWPORT 28-1, this version featured an updated rudder and keel as well as completely redesigned coach roof and interior. The NEWPORT 28 was hugely successful with more than 1000 boats built (including both versions).

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by C&C Design Group and built by Capital Yachts Inc. (USA), the Newport 28-2 is a well-regarded coastal cruiser with a production run of 1000 hulls constructed between 1982 and 1987. Its popularity is evidenced by a diverse range of owner-maintained engine upgrades, with Universal Atomic 4s being the most common powerplant, alongside Yamaha, Yanmar, Westerbeke, and Kubota options.

Best for:
This boat is ideally suited for coastal cruising and weekend sailing, offering a comfortable interior and manageable handling for couples or small families. Its moderate displacement and fin keel design make it accessible for novice sailors while providing enough performance for experienced weekend warriors.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 7000.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 2.04, the Newport 28-2 is primarily designed for coastal waters rather than extended offshore passages. Its comfort ratio of 20.96 suggests a relatively motiony ride in heavy seas, limiting its suitability for serious bluewater cruising.
Comparables:
Comparable vessels from this era include the Cal 27 and O'Day 28, which share similar dimensions and target the same market of affordable, trailerable coastal cruisers. These boats are comparable due to their similar beam, draft, and emphasis on interior volume over extreme racing performance.
