About the MUMM 36
Originally (first 6) called FARR 36. More than 120 built. South American builder was: Astillero del Estuario Buenos Aires, Argentina. (Farr Design #299.)
Designed by Bruce Farr and built by Carroll Marine under license, the Mumm 36 is a high-performance cruiser-racer with 120 hulls constructed in 1993. Its fractional sloop rig and fin keel configuration deliver exceptional speed, but owners report significant structural maintenance challenges that require vigilant oversight.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced sailors seeking a fast, responsive coastal cruiser who are prepared to manage extensive structural repairs and are comfortable with a performance-oriented, less stable platform.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low displacement of 8150.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 14.22, the Mumm 36 is primarily a coastal racer-cruiser rather than a heavy bluewater passagemaker, though its capsize ratio of 2.36 indicates reasonable stability for protected offshore passages.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Farr 36 and other late-1990s performance cruisers like the Beneteau First 36.5, as they share similar fractional rigs, light displacement characteristics, and a focus on racing capability over heavy bluewater comfort.
