About the MISTRESS 39 (ALLIED)
Available in aft (drawing top) and center cockpit (cutaway bottom) versions. When first introduced it was called the ALLIED 39 CRUISING KETCH. (Not to be confused with another ALLIED 39, from the same builder.) The MISTRESS 39 MKII, an aft cockpit version with a clipper bow and other differences was introduced in 1975.
Designed by Arthur Edmunds and built by Allied Boat Co. (USA) between 1971 and 1978, the Mistress 39 is a robust masthead ketch with a production run of 60 hulls. Its heavy displacement of 20800.0 lb and full/long keel configuration reflect a design philosophy prioritizing stability and seakeeping over high-speed planing.
- Best for:
- This vessel is best suited for coastal cruisers and those seeking a comfortable, stable passage-making boat, as evidenced by the high prevalence of Princess galleys and extensive canvas upgrades like dodgers and biminis for extended living aboard.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 1.75 and a displacement/length ratio of 349.83, the Mistress 39 demonstrates strong inherent stability and offshore suitability, though its long keel may limit maneuverability in tight quarters.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other heavy-displacement ketches from the early 1970s such as the Cal 40 or O'Day 38, the Mistress 39 shares similar dimensions and a focus on traditional cruising comfort rather than racing performance.
