About the MAYFLOWER 48/STADEL 48
The boats were fitted with either Ford or Perkins diesels. One of several models sold based on this particular hull. This note from Mayflower owner, Richard Johnson: "42 hulls were built by May flower Yachts in Taiwan between 1980 and 1984. It took 7 months to build each yacht"....., "Most of the yachts were semi custom two or three cabin versions. George Stadel III supervised all construction to a very high standard. George Lim was the yard manager." A shallow draft version was offered.
Designed by George Stadel Jr. and built by Mayflower Boatyards (Taiwan) between 1979 and 1984, the Mayflower 48/Stadel 48 is a rare vessel with only 42 hulls produced. This limited production run of a 48-foot masthead ketch reflects its status as a specialized, heavy-displacement cruiser rather than a mass-market yacht.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for experienced coastal and offshore cruisers who prioritize heavy displacement comfort and stability over high-speed performance. Its substantial size and ketch rig make it particularly well-suited for couples or small families seeking a comfortable, stable passage-making platform.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 37000.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 1.62, the Mayflower 48 exhibits strong inherent stability and heavy-displacement characteristics that support capable bluewater passage-making. Its fin keel and masthead ketch rig further contribute to a balanced and seaworthy offshore profile.
- Comparables:
- Comparable vessels include other heavy-displacement ketches from the late 1970s and early 1980s, such as the Hallberg-Rassy 43 or the O'Day 42, which share similar design philosophies focused on seaworthiness and comfort. These boats are comparable due to their similar era, heavy displacement characteristics, and focus on safe offshore passage-making.
