About the MARLIN HERITAGE 23

This is a larger version of the Herreshoff designed FISH but with a cabin and different rig. A smaller version was originally built of wood by Herreshoff Manufacturing. The design was acquired by Cape Cod Shipbuilding where it was built of fiberglass with some modifications at the direction of Sydney Herreshoff. Besides the version shown above, another variation has a larger cockpit and smaller 'cuddy' cabin (photo above). Was also available with a gas Palmer 19 hp engine.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Marlin Heritage 23 is a classic 1958 design by Herreshoff, built by Cape Cod Shipbuilding with a total production run of 160 hulls. As a 23.0 ft LOA masthead sloop, it represents a specific era of American small-craft design, offering a lightweight displacement of 3845.0 lb and a full/long keel configuration.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for coastal cruisers and day sailors who prioritize traditional aesthetics and ease of trailering over long-range offshore capability. Its light displacement and small size make it ideal for protected waters and single-handers seeking a manageable, classic sailing experience.
Bluewater capability:
With a capsize ratio of 1.94 and a relatively light displacement of 3845.0 lb, the Heritage 23 is not designed for serious bluewater voyaging. Its full/long keel provides directional stability, but its small size and light ballast ratio limit its suitability to coastal and protected water cruising.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include other 1950s-60s American trailerable cruisers like the Pearson Ensign or early Catalina models, which share similar dimensions and roles. They are comparable due to their shared era, small footprint, and focus on recreational coastal sailing rather than heavy bluewater performance.
