About the MACGREGOR 26M
A new design which replaced the MACGREGOR 26X. Design changes include a deeper V bottom, softer chines, the daggerboard, twin rudders and rotating spar. Hull weight empty: 2,550 lbs. Ballast includes 300 lbs of fixed ballast plus up to an additional 1,150 lbs of water. Sail area: -Main: 170 ft² -Jib (100%): 130 ft² -Genoa (150%): 206 ft² -Spinnaker: 350 ft² As with the previous model, designed for use with a more than 'auxilary' sized outboard. Capable of 22 mph under power. A similar version later reintroduced by Laura MacGregor Sharp, daughter of Roger & Mary Lou MacGregor, was called the TATTOO 26. Production of the Tattoo 26 ran from 2013 - 2015.
Designed by Roger Macgregor and built by Macgregor Yacht Corp. (USA) from 2003–2014, the MacGregor 26M is a compact, trailerable sloop with a production run of 5000 hulls. Its lightweight displacement of 4000.0 lb and fractional sloop rig with rotating spar prioritize ease of handling and transportability over heavy offshore performance.
- Best for:
- This boat is ideal for coastal cruisers, weekend warriors, and single-handers who prioritize trailerability and low maintenance costs. It suits owners seeking a manageable, affordable entry into sailing rather than serious bluewater expeditions.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low displacement of 4000.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 1.96, the MacGregor 26M is not designed for extended offshore passages and is best suited for protected coastal waters and short trips.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to the Catalina 22 and O'Day 23 due to similar trailerable dimensions and coastal cruising focus. It also shares market space with the MacGregor 26C, though the 26M's fractional rig and rotating mast offer distinct handling characteristics.
