About the LUDERS 44 (FG)

Built for the US Naval Academy by Luders Marine Construction. (AKA NAVAL ACADEMY YAWL/NA 44) Originally of wood planked construction (1939). Replaced with a fiberglass version (by Uniflite) in 1963 with a slightly different hull/rig design and different interior layout. (4 went to the US Coast Guard) A few of the FG version were sold to individuals as sloops/cutters. (See ANNAPOLIS 44). Naval Academy boats were passed on to the US Coast Guard Academy for a few years before being sold off to individuals. (Replaced in 1985 with the NAVY 44/DEFIANCE CLASS by McGurdy & Rhodes and again, in 2000, with a Dave Pedrick designed 44 footer.) The layout shown here is for the original wood version. Thanks to Mainbrace 76, and several others for providing additional background information. Specs above are for the fiberglass version See LUDERS 44 for specs on the wood (1939) version.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by A. E. Luders and built by Uniflite Corp. in 1963, the Luders 44 (FG) is a classic full-keel yawl known for its heavy displacement of 24800.0 lb and robust construction. With a production run limited to the single year of 1963, this vessel represents a specific era of American yacht building, characterized by a Comfort ratio of 45.25 and a D/L ratio of 405.98.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for experienced coastal cruisers and conservative bluewater passagemakers who prioritize seakeeping and comfort over speed, given its high displacement and full keel design. It appeals to owners willing to invest significant time in structural maintenance and systems upgrades to preserve its classic integrity.
Bluewater capability:
The Luders 44 is highly capable offshore, evidenced by its low Capsize ratio of 1.53 and high D/L ratio of 405.98, which provide exceptional stability and motion comfort in heavy weather. Its full/long keel design further enhances tracking and safety, making it a reliable choice for extended passages.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include the Tartan 44 and the O'Day 42, which share similar full-keel, heavy-displacement characteristics and masthead yawl or sloop rigs from the early 1960s. These vessels are similar in their emphasis on stability and offshore capability rather than planing performance.
