About the JOKER S30
The prototype finished 3rd at the Int. 1/2 ton cup of 1968. Arvika Plastic Ind. went out of business and the molds were purchased by Albin Marine (1972). With a few minor changes it became the hugely successful BALLAD 30. See BALLAD 30.
The Joker S30 is a Swedish-built cruising sloop designed by Rolf Magnusson and constructed by Arvika Plastic Ind. (SWE) between 1968 and 1972. With a displacement of 7280.0 lb and a beam of 9.71 ft, this vessel represents a classic era of Scandinavian boatbuilding, though the exact number of hulls built remains unverified.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for coastal cruisers and weekend sailors who prioritize a comfortable, stable ride over high-performance racing metrics. Its moderate sail area-to-displacement ratio of 16.24 suggests it is well-matched for relaxed cruising rather than aggressive short-handed racing.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low capsize ratio of 2.01 and a displacement of 7280.0 lb, the Joker S30 demonstrates strong inherent stability and seaworthiness for offshore passages. Its fin keel and masthead sloop rig provide a balanced platform capable of handling open water conditions with confidence.
- Comparables:
- Comparable vessels from this era include other Swedish designs like the Hallberg-Rassy 30 or the Nautor's Swan 36, which share similar displacement and beam characteristics. These boats are comparable due to their shared focus on robust construction and comfortable offshore cruising capabilities typical of late 60s European designs.
