About the DN ICEBOAT

Hull width: 1.75' Approx. all up weight: 120 lbs. The DN is the largest iceboat class in the world, so named because it was the winner of an iceboat design contest sponsored by the Detroit News in 1937. First called the BLUE STREAK 60. (60 sq. ft. meas. SA) It's unknown how many have actually been built, but The IDNIYRA currently (2007) has about 2000 members (1000 in North America and 1000 in Europe), representing 20 countries. A World Championship is held each year, with the site alternating between North America and Europe. There are also North American and European Championsips held each year, as well as numerous other international and local regattas.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The DN Iceboat is a specialized ice sailing craft designed by Archie Arroll, with production records indicating a build year of 1937 and an unknown total hull count. Built by various manufacturers, this 12.0 ft LOA vessel represents a specific era of ice yacht design with a rotating spar cat rig.

Best for:
This boat is exclusively suited for experienced ice sailors seeking a lightweight, high-performance platform for frozen lakes and rivers, rather than water-based cruising.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of only 120.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 6.49, this vessel is strictly for ice sailing and has zero offshore or bluewater capability.
Comparables:
Comparable vessels include other vintage ice yachts from the 1930s-1950s era with similar rotating spar configurations and low displacement, such as the DN series variants or early North American ice yachts.
