About the CONCORDIA 40
The CONCORDIA 40 is also referred to as the CONCORDIA YAWL. The first 4 CONCORDIA 40's were built in the US. The rest were imported from Germany. A slightly larger version (see CONCORDIA 41) was imported to the US after WWII. (26 boats) CONCORDIA 40's were built with an oak keel, steam bent oak frames, African mahogany planking, mahogany deck trim, a canvas covered main deck and coach roof. Ballast was usually iron but sometimes lead. A testament to the construction standard is that nearly all of these boats survived the twentieth century intact and in sailing condition. See also CONCORDIA 41.
The Concordia 40 is a classic German-built cruising yacht designed by C. Raymond Hunt and constructed by Abeking & Rasmussen between 1938 and 1966, with a total production run of 103 hulls. Its authoritative specifications include a LOA of 39.83 ft, a displacement of 18000.0 lb, and a full/long keel configuration that defines its traditional cruising character.
- Best for:
- This vessel is best suited for experienced coastal cruisers and traditionalists who prioritize seakworthiness and comfort over high-speed performance, given its heavy displacement and conservative design.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 18000.0 lb, a capsize ratio of 1.57, and a full/long keel, the Concordia 40 is well-suited for bluewater cruising due to its inherent stability and proven offshore pedigree.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats from this era include the Tartan 38 and the O'Day 38, as they share similar displacement ranges and full-keel designs that emphasize stability and safe offshore handling over planing capabilities.
