About the CL 16

CL = Croce & Lofthouse. The following is from an article "C & L Boatworks - Everything That’s Old Is New Again!" by Andy Adams in Boating Industry Canada... "In the 1950s in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Henry Croce and Ken Lofthouse [the C and L in C&L] were the importers of a sailboat called the Wayfarer which was made out of wood and built in the UK. In the late 60s, there was a strike and the supply of Wayfarers was cut off. Croce and Lofthouse were temporarily left without a business so they created a new 16 foot sailboat in fibreglass to replace the wooden Wayfarer; hence the CL16 was born in all fibreglass construction." There was a bit of controversy here as the CL 16 is identical in shape of wetted hull and sail plan to the Wayfarer, but has an altered cockpit. This is why we have included Ian Proctor in the role of designer above.

The CL 16 is a compact fractional sloop designed by Ian Proctor, Graham Dodd, and George Blanchard, and built by CL Sailboats (CAN) in 1968. With a displacement of 385.0 lb and a LOA of 16.0 ft, this vessel represents a lightweight, trailerable design from the late 1960s.

Best for:

This boat is best suited for coastal day sailing, lake cruising, or as a trailerable project for single-handers and couples seeking a low-maintenance, lightweight package.

Bluewater capability:

With a low displacement of 385.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 3.54, the CL 16 is not suitable for offshore or bluewater cruising and is strictly intended for protected waters.

Comparables:

Comparable boats include other 16-foot trailerable designs from the late 1960s and early 1970s, such as the O'Day 16 or various trailerable daysailers, due to similar LOA, fractional rig configurations, and trailerable weight.
