About the CHANNEL 70
Originally commissioned as a custom built yacht in foam and glass the design then went into limited production in Russia in aluminium. The design, with a slightly more upright bow was offered to Oyster Marine in 1992 to be built in GRP. Sail Areas Main: 1559 sq.ft./144.8 m2 Jib: 1012 sq.ft./90.2 m2 Masthead spinnaker: 4770 sq.ft./443.1 m2
The Channel 70 is a rare, heavy-displacement cruising yacht designed by Julian Everitt and built by Channel Yachts (RUS) between 1989 and 1997, with only 5 hulls constructed. Its substantial 52555.0 lb displacement and 121.5 D/L ratio reflect a design prioritizing stability and comfort over speed.
- Best for:
- This vessel is best suited for experienced bluewater cruisers seeking a robust, slow-motion offshore passage maker, particularly those who value the spaciousness of a 70.5 ft LOA and do not mind the maintenance demands of a large, complex yacht.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low capsize ratio of 2.24 and significant ballast of 18998.6 lb, the Channel 70 is inherently stable and well-suited for offshore cruising, though its age and limited production run require careful verification of structural integrity.
- Comparables:
- Comparable vessels include other large, heavy-displacement European cruisers from the late 1980s and 1990s, such as the Hallberg-Rassy 53 or Oyster 565, which share similar fractional sloop rigs and high comfort ratios aimed at serious offshore passage making.
