About the CARBINEER 44 (MOODY)
Shown here is the later deck salon version. The original design had more of a standard doghouse. An extended version was called the CARBINEER 46. Another similar boat, the CARBERNEER 46, was built in Australia.(1979-1989 - 16 built.) The name was changed slightly in order to escape paying extra royalties.
Designed by Laurent Giles and built by A H Moody & Son Ltd (UK) between 1968β1979, the Carbineer 44 is a substantial cruising ketch with only 32 hulls produced. Its heavy displacement of 35838.0 lb and fin keel configuration reflect a design philosophy prioritizing stability and seakeeping over speed.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for experienced coastal and offshore cruisers who value comfort and stability, as indicated by its high comfort ratio of 51.78 and low capsize ratio of 1.48. It appeals to owners seeking a robust, traditional layout with modern engine options, given the prevalence of Yanmar and Perkins installations.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 35838.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 1.48, the Carbineer 44 is well-suited for bluewater cruising, offering excellent stability and resistance to capsizing in heavy weather.
- Comparables:
- Comparable vessels include other Laurent Giles designs like the Moody 34 or 40, which share similar heavy-displacement characteristics and cruising-oriented layouts. It also compares to contemporary heavy ketches such as the Hallberg-Rassy 42, offering similar offshore capability and build quality.
