A shortened version of the MOUETTE 19 with a different deck. Bayliner apparently aquired some of the assets of Paceship Yachts at this time. Similar to the US 18. (Thanks to former Bayliner employee Craig Montague for providing a lot of background information on these yachts.)

The Buccaneer 180 is a compact, lightweight day sailor designed by G. William McVay/Bayliner and built by Bayliner Marine Corp (USA) in 1974. With a displacement of 525.0 lb and a fractional sloop rig, this vessel represents the entry-level end of the cruising spectrum, prioritizing ease of handling over heavy-weather stability.

Best for:

This boat is best suited for protected coastal day sailing, trailerable weekend trips, and novice sailors seeking a low-maintenance, easy-to-launch package. Its light displacement and shallow draft make it ideal for shallow-water anchorages and trailering, rather than extended offshore passages.

Bluewater capability:

With a low comfort ratio of 4.0 and a capsize ratio of 3.31, the Buccaneer 180 is not designed for bluewater cruising and should be restricted to coastal and inland waters. Its light displacement of 525.0 lb offers little momentum in heavy seas, making it unsuitable for offshore passage-making.

Comparable vessels include other late-1970s trailerable day sailers like the O'Day 22 or Catalina 22, which share similar fractional sloop rigs and trailer-friendly dimensions. These boats are comparable due to their role as accessible, family-oriented day boats rather than serious cruisers.
