About the BLOCK ISLAND 40
Based on VITESSE 40, in Holland. This was first design for fiberglass by Tripp and one of the earliest production fiberglass boats of this size anywhere Beetle Boat Co. built the first 26 boats. Later, the molds were aquired by Metalmast Marine. The version they built has a separate spade rudder and reverse transom. (Sometimes referred to as BLOCK ISLAND 40-2) and was built until 1978?. Re-introduced, on a limited basis, in the early 1980's with a hull similar to the original but with redesigned deck and coach roof. Thanks to Jerry Packer, owner of Hull No. 1 'Seal', for providing additional information.
The Block Island 40 is a rare, heavy-displacement cruising yacht designed by William Tripp Jr. and built by Beetle Boat Co./American Boat Building. With only one hull built in 1957, this unique vessel represents a singular example of mid-century American yacht design rather than a production series.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for experienced coastal cruisers or those seeking a unique, classic project, as its single-hull status and age require significant maintenance and customization. Its heavy displacement and yawl rig suggest it favors comfortable, stable passage-making over high-speed performance.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 21000.0 lb, a D/L ratio of 450.79, and a Capsize ratio of 1.71, the Block Island 40 possesses the heavy, stable hull form typical of serious offshore cruisers from its era.
- Comparables:
- Comparable vessels include other William Tripp designs like the Islander 38 or 42, which share similar heavy-displacement, full-keel characteristics. It also aligns with other 1950s American yawls such as the Pearson 36 or early O'Day models, though the Block Island 40 is significantly larger and heavier.
