About the ALPA 42

From the same hull mold used to built the ALPA 12.7 (1969). The tooling was later purchased by the Zuanelli yard where, with a few modifications, it became the Zuanelli 42.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Alpa 42 is a rare, heavy-displacement cruising ketch designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Alpa (ITA) in 1973, with only 8 hulls constructed. Its substantial displacement of 26455.0 lb and high comfort ratio of 42.71 indicate a vessel built for stability and seakworthiness rather than speed.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for experienced coastal and offshore cruisers who prioritize motion comfort and traditional sailing characteristics over high performance. Its staysail ketch rig and heavy displacement make it ideal for those seeking a stable, easy-to-handle passage-making boat.
Bluewater capability:
With a capsize ratio of 1.51 and a displacement/length ratio of 222.71, the Alpa 42 exhibits strong inherent stability and resistance to capsizing, making it well-suited for bluewater cruising. Its fin keel and heavy ballast of 9920.6 lb further support its offshore credentials.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include the Sparkman & Stephens-designed Tartan 42 and the similarly heavy-displacement ketches like the Bristol 40.9, sharing the era's emphasis on robust construction and comfortable motion. These vessels appeal to buyers seeking proven S&S designs with similar beam and displacement characteristics.
