About the ALAJUELA 38

An adaptation of a William Atkin design, (specifically similar to INGRID, GOUCHO.) The Mark II version featured a different rig (designed by Raymond Richards) Number built by varying accounts: between 70 and 80 including those sold as bare hulls or kits. Boats to this same design were built by others using various materials including wood and ferro-cement. An early introductory builder's brochure from 1973 lists the following: Displacement: 26,000 lbs Ballast; 11,000 lbs Sail area: 932 sqft

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Alajuela 38 is a robust, heavy-displacement cutter designed by Colin Archer and William Atkin, built by Alajuela Yacht Corp. (USA) between 1974 and 1985. With only 72 hulls produced, this rare vessel combines traditional full-keel stability with modern cruising amenities, resulting in a boat that prioritizes seakeeping and durability over speed.

Best for:
This boat is ideally suited for serious bluewater cruisers and offshore passagemakers who value safety, stability, and traditional handling characteristics. Its heavy displacement and full keel make it less ideal for casual coastal day-sailing or tight marina maneuvering, but excellent for long-range, self-sufficient voyages.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 27000.0 lb, a capsize ratio of 1.54, and a full/long keel, the Alajuela 38 exhibits exceptional offshore stability and tracking ability, making it highly capable for extended bluewater passages.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include the Tartan 38 and the Cal 40, as they share similar production eras, heavy displacement characteristics, and full-keel designs aimed at offshore durability. The Alajuela 38 distinguishes itself with its specific Colin Archer/William Atkin pedigree and cutter rig, offering a more traditional sailing experience than many contemporary fractional-rigged cruisers.
