About the MUSTANG 30
First yacht designed to the CHS rule (later to become IRC). Originally came standard with a winged keel (as shown in drawing above) which many owners have converted to a deep fin with bulb.
Designed by Paul Handley and built by Harley Raceboats (UK) from 1988–1998, the Mustang 30 is a rare fractional sloop with only 29 hulls produced. Its lightweight displacement of 5754.0 lb and low D/L ratio of 204.92 define it as a performance-oriented cruiser rather than a heavy displacement bluewater vessel.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and performance-oriented sailors who prioritize speed and handling over heavy offshore comfort, given its low comfort ratio of 21.67 and relatively light displacement.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 1.82 and a fin keel, the Mustang 30 is capable of coastal passages but lacks the heavy displacement and full keel stability typically preferred for extended bluewater cruising.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other late-80s/90s performance cruisers like the Beneteau First 30 or O'Day 30, but with significantly lower production numbers and a distinct fractional rig setup that appeals to racers.
