About the MORGAN 383/384

In 1982, the MORGAN 382 was renamed the MORGAN 383. It featured a taller rig, shorter boom and modified rudder. Some time later it became the 384, with mostly cosmetic changes. About 100 of each of these later models were built. See MORGAN 382.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Morgan 383/384 is a robust cruising sloop designed by Ted Brewer and built by Morgan Yachts (USA) in 1982, with a total production of 200 hulls. This model represents a specific snapshot in Morgan's history, combining Ted Brewer's renowned heavy-displacement design philosophy with the builder's reputation for solid construction.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for coastal and nearshore cruisers who prioritize comfort and stability over high-speed performance, particularly those who appreciate a spacious interior and a forgiving ride in choppy conditions.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 18000.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 1.83, the Morgan 383/384 demonstrates strong inherent stability and seaworthiness suitable for protected coastal passages and short offshore trips, though its age warrants thorough structural inspection before extended bluewater use.
Comparables:
Comparable boats from the same era include the Cal 40 and the O'Day 38, as they share similar beam dimensions and heavy-displacement characteristics that favor comfortable motion over speed. The Morgan 383/384 distinguishes itself with a slightly higher comfort ratio and a more traditional full-keel or modified fin aesthetic typical of Ted Brewer designs.
