About the MORGAN 36-4/6
A keel/cb version was also available (as shown in drawing) as well as a more performance oriented version (with shorter coach roof and longer cockpit) sometimes called NEWSON-MAREK 36R. Keel/CB version: Draft (max.) 6.92' Draft (min.) 4.67' E measurement reduced slightly on later boats. (IOR tweaking?). Alternate shorter rig: I: 45.00' J: 14.33' P: 38.33' E: 13.00' Also called NELSON MAREK 36. Not to be confused with a later (1995) NELSON MAREK 36 built in Canada.
The Morgan 36-4/6 is a heavy-displacement cruising sloop designed by Nelson/Marek and built by Morgan Yachts (USA) in 1982. With a displacement of 11900.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 21.81, this vessel prioritizes stability and seakeeping over speed, reflecting its origins as a robust coastal cruiser.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for coastal cruisers and those seeking a stable, comfortable platform for extended weekend trips or moderate offshore passages, rather than high-performance racing or extreme bluewater expeditions.
- Bluewater capability:
- While the high displacement of 11900.0 lb and low capsize ratio of 2.08 suggest inherent stability, the single production year of 1982 and reported structural issues with the keel and deck core limit its suitability for serious bluewater voyaging without significant structural remediation.
- Comparables:
- Comparable vessels from the early 1980s include the Cal 34 and O'Day 36, which share similar heavy-displacement characteristics and coastal cruising roles, though the Morgan offers a more refined interior layout typical of its builder's reputation for comfort.
