About the MORGAN 30
A similar boat called the KK30 was available in kit form. An updated version called the MORGAN CLASSIC 300 has a different interior arrangement and slightly taller rig. Morgan introduced another 30 footer in 1972 (listed here as the MORGAN 30-2) which is an entirely different design.
Designed by Charles Morgan and built by Morgan Yachts (USA) from 1968–1971, the Morgan 30 is a classic heavy-displacement cruiser with 320 hulls produced. Its substantial 10500.0 lb displacement and 4500.3 lb ballast reflect a design philosophy prioritizing stability and seakindliness over speed, resulting in a robust vessel that remains popular among traditionalists.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for coastal cruisers and those seeking a stable, comfortable platform for short-to-medium offshore passages, particularly owners who value the classic full-keel handling characteristics and are prepared for ongoing maintenance of vintage systems.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a Capsize ratio of 1.69 and a D/L ratio of 332.39, the Morgan 30 exhibits strong inherent stability and heavy displacement that supports offshore suitability, provided critical structural issues like keel smiles and deck core integrity are addressed.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Cal 30 and O'Day 30, which share similar production eras and heavy-displacement, full-keel designs that prioritize safety and comfort over performance, making them ideal for conservative cruisers.
