About the MISTRAL 33
Until 1972, the MISTRAL 33 was built under the Hallberg name. After that, it became a Hallberg-Rassy. The Mistral''s hull is GRP fiberglass, fiberglass deck with teak overlay, and mahogany doghouse and cabin. IOR 1/2 ton.
Designed by Olle Enderlein and built by Hallberg-Rassy, the Mistral 33 is a classic heavy-displacement cruiser with a production run of 1968β1976 yielding 216 hulls. Its substantial displacement of 12750.0 lb and high comfort ratio of 32.36 reflect a design prioritizing stability and seakeeping over raw speed.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal and offshore cruisers who value a solid, motion-dampened ride and are willing to accept moderate sailing performance for exceptional comfort and safety. It is well-suited for couples or families seeking a robust, traditional sailing experience rather than high-performance racing.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 1.73 and a displacement/length ratio of 333.37, the Mistral 33 is highly capable offshore, offering excellent stability and resistance to capsizing in heavy weather. Its proven hull form and heavy ballast of 5291.1 lb make it a reliable choice for extended passages.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Hallberg-Rassy 35 and other Enderlein-designed heavy displacement cruisers from the late 1960s and 1970s, such as the Nauticat 33. These vessels share similar heavy displacement characteristics, fin keel configurations, and a focus on bluewater capability over planing ability.
