About the MG RS34
Based on an IOR 3/4 ton design 'Roller Skate' (1982). (Prototype was 'Seren Wib') Available in Grand Prix or Racer/Cruisers versions. A number of other boats were built to this design besides this one from MG.
The MG RS34 is a rare, performance-oriented cruiser designed by Rob Humphreys and built by Marine Glass (UK) in 1983, with only 15 hulls produced. Its fractional sloop rig and fin keel configuration reflect a design philosophy focused on sailing efficiency rather than mass-market volume.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and performance-oriented sailors who prioritize sailing dynamics and a responsive helm over heavy displacement comfort. It is well-suited for those who appreciate a lightweight, agile vessel with a proven track record for upwind performance.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 7850.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 2.26, the RS34 is capable of coastal and nearshore passages but lacks the heavy ballast and robust construction typically preferred for extended bluewater voyaging.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other 1980s fractional sloop designs like the O'Day 35 or Catalina 34, the RS34 offers similar length but with a significantly lighter displacement and narrower beam. It competes with performance cruisers of the era that favor a lower D/L ratio for better acceleration and handling.
