About the MARINER 40 (GARDEN)
The earliest version of the MARINER 40 was built of wood in 1965 and then later in fiberglass with wood decks and superstructure. Far East Yachts built the boats, first in Japan (95 hulls) and then in California. Later the molds for the MARINER 40 and MARINER 36 were purchased by another company and construction continued for some years at the Ta-Yang yard in Taiwan.
The Mariner 40 (Garden) is a heavy-displacement ketch designed by C. Oberly/W. Garden and built by Far East Yacht Builders, Inc - Ta Yang in 1965. With a displacement of 26500.0 lb and a D/L ratio of 430.8, this single-year production model represents a robust, traditional cruising platform.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and those seeking a stable, heavy-displacement vessel for protected waters, given its significant weight and age-related maintenance demands.
- Bluewater capability:
- While its high displacement of 26500.0 lb and low capsize ratio of 1.54 suggest inherent offshore stability, critical structural issues like deck core moisture and compression post rot significantly compromise its bluewater readiness without extensive restoration.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include other 1960s heavy-displacement ketches like the Cal 40 or O'Day 40, which share similar full keel designs and traditional layouts, though the Mariner's specific Far East construction and single-year run make it unique.
