About the MACGREGOR 26D
Modified with centerboard in 1990 (MACGREGOR 26S). Number built includes both S & D models, making the 26 one of the most widely produced sailboats of this size and type in the world.
Designed by Roger Macgregor and built by Macgregor Yacht Corp. (USA) in 1986, the MacGregor 26D is a compact fractional sloop with a production run of 6000 hulls. Its lightweight displacement of 2850.0 lb and variable keel configuration define its performance characteristics, making it a distinct entry in the trailerable cruiser market.
- Best for:
- This boat is ideal for coastal cruisers and weekend warriors who prioritize ease of trailering and single-handed handling, supported by the high frequency of bimini and solar panel installations indicating a focus on comfortable, self-sufficient short passages.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low displacement of 2850.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 2.24, the MacGregor 26D is not suited for serious bluewater passages, but its fractional sloop rig and variable keel allow for competent coastal and protected water cruising.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the O'Day 23 and Catalina 22, as they share similar fractional sloop rigs, trailerable footprints, and target the same market of owners seeking affordable, manageable coastal cruising platforms from the same era.
