About the MACGREGOR 25
The first version was called the VENTURE 25. With relatively few changes, it became the MACGREGOR 25 (around 1980). With more than 7000 boats sold, it's one of the most popular models from this builder. Photo of Venture 25 courtesy Adam Hunt.
Designed by Roger Macgregor and built by Macgregor Yacht Corp. (USA) from 1973–1987, the MacGregor 25 is a compact trailerable sloop with a production run of 7000 hulls. Its lightweight displacement of 2100.0 lb and fractional sloop rig define its performance characteristics, while its variable keel options allow for shallow-water access.
- Best for:
- This boat is ideal for coastal cruisers and trailerable sailing enthusiasts who prioritize ease of transport and storage over heavy offshore capability. It suits single-handers or couples seeking a manageable, low-maintenance vessel for day sailing and short overnight trips.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low displacement of 2100.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 2.48, the MacGregor 25 is not designed for extended bluewater passages but is suitable for protected coastal cruising due to its stable hull form and moderate comfort ratio of 8.74.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Catalina 22 and O'Day 23, which share similar trailerable dimensions and fractional sloop rigs from the same era. These vessels offer similar beam and length profiles, making them direct competitors in the entry-level trailerable market.
