About the LUDERS 16

Originally called the Fishers Island L-Class. The very first boats (14) were of conventional planked construction from the Luders Yard for the Fishers Island YC. Most of these were destroyed in a hurricane after the very first year. After World War II orders came, first from the Chicago YC, for a new version, built of molded plywood. It is thought more than 100 of these were built. In the 1960's and 70's, a fiberglass version was built by Continental Plastics Corporation, then by Midwest Marine and Easterly Yachts.

Designed by A. E. Luders and built by Luders Marine Construction (USA), the Luders 16 is a historic fractional sloop with a production run spanning 1933–1979, resulting in 229 hulls built. This long production history reflects the boat's enduring appeal as a compact, lightweight cruiser, though its age necessitates careful inspection of structural integrity.

With a displacement of 2950.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 1.61, the Luders 16 is not designed for serious offshore passage-making but is capable of protected coastal and bay sailing. Its light displacement and fin keel prioritize performance in light winds over heavy-weather stability.
