Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Yachting France, the Lacoste 42 is a classic French cruiser with a production run of 50 hulls between 1985 and 1991. Its design reflects the S&S tradition of balanced performance and comfort, resulting in a vessel that remains highly regarded for its build quality and seakeeping abilities.

Best for:
This boat is ideally suited for experienced coastal cruisers and those seeking a comfortable, stable passage-making vessel, as indicated by its high comfort ratio of 22.46 and substantial displacement of 16535.0 lb. It appeals to owners who prioritize a traditional masthead sloop rig and robust construction over high-performance racing metrics.
Bluewater capability:
With a displacement of 16535.0 lb, a low capsize ratio of 2.03, and a fin keel with a max draft of 7.5 ft, the Lacoste 42 is well-suited for offshore passages, offering excellent stability and motion comfort in heavy weather.
Comparables:
The Lacoste 42 compares favorably to other late-1980s Sparkman & Stephens designs like the Tartan 42 or the Nauticat 41, sharing similar displacement and beam characteristics. It also rivals the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 41 of the same era, though the Lacoste offers a heavier, more conservative hull form with a lower capsize ratio of 2.03.
