About the K-BOAT
Originally called KOHINOOR. Sailed primarily on the Finger Lakes, NY, (USA). 110-pound steel centerboard. A short run of fiberglass versions were built by East Suburban Plastics of Syracuse, NY (1975). The Wright-Built Boat Company was located at Dundee, NY. Dimensions are approximate.
Designed by Murray Wright and built by Wright-Built Boat Co. (USA), the K-Boat is a historic 15.5 ft fractional sloop with a production run spanning 1934–1978. With only 350 hulls built, this lightweight vessel represents a unique niche in small boat history, characterized by its compact dimensions and variable keel options.
- Best for:
- This boat is best suited for coastal day-sailing, trailerable cruising, and novice sailors seeking a manageable, low-maintenance entry into sailing. Its small size and light displacement make it ideal for single-handers or couples looking for a simple, fun weekend boat rather than a liveaboard.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 535.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 2.96, the K-Boat is not designed for offshore bluewater cruising and is strictly limited to protected coastal waters.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include other 1930s-1970s trailerable designs like the O'Day 16 or early Catalina 16, which share similar fractional sloop rigs and coastal cruising roles. These vessels are comparable due to their emphasis on ease of transport and straightforward sailing characteristics.
