About the ISLANDER 34

Probably based on the original ISLANDER 32 (1963) with a different rudder, coach roof and bowsprit added. (A new rudder profile itself, almost certainly, was influenced by that of the 12 meter 'Constellation' that successfully defended the America's Cup in 1964.) Sold also in kit form as the YACHTCRAFT 34.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Islander 34 is a rare, heavy-displacement cruising sloop designed by McGlasson/Islander and built by Wayfarer Yacht Corp. (USA) with only 14 hulls constructed in 1964. Its substantial 10400.0 lb displacement and 297.14 D/L ratio reflect a design prioritizing stability and comfort over speed.

Best for:
This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and bluewater adventurers who value a solid, motion-dampened ride and are prepared for significant structural maintenance.
Bluewater capability:
With a low 1.84 capsize ratio and high 27.14 comfort ratio, the Islander 34 is well-suited for offshore passages, provided critical structural integrity is maintained.
Comparables:
Comparable to other 1960s heavy-displacement American cruisers like the Tartan 34 or O'Day 36, it shares a similar emphasis on interior volume and offshore capability over planing performance.
