About the ISLANDER 28
Diesel power was available as an option. A similar 'Bahama' model was introduced in 1981 but sold poorly. Not long after, the standard model was then brought back into production until 1985. With more than 400 sold, this was among the brands most successful models. Rated highly on the used sailboat market. Robert Perry has stated that this is one of his favorite designs.
Designed by Robert Perry and built by Islander Yachts (USA) from 1975–1985, the Islander 28 is a well-regarded coastal cruiser with a production run of 430 hulls. Its reputation for performance and comfort is tempered by significant structural maintenance requirements, particularly regarding the keel sump and deck core integrity.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and weekend sailors who prioritize performance and interior volume, provided they are prepared for rigorous, ongoing maintenance of the hull-deck joint and keel structure.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 2.06 and a comfort ratio of 21.01, the Islander 28 is generally considered suitable for protected coastal passages rather than extended bluewater voyaging, as its light displacement and fin keel prioritize speed over heavy-weather stability.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Cal 27 and O'Day 27, which share similar displacement and era, but the Islander 28 distinguishes itself with a lighter displacement of 7000.0 lb and a higher SA/D ratio of 15.83, offering superior upwind performance.
