About the IDRA 14

Kennedy built the prototype in 1939. Production, however, did not begin until 1946. Initial builders included both Nunn and Robertson's Boatyard. However, two builders emerged who accounted for many of the future boats, these were James Kearney and Sons, East Wall who built many of the Dublin boats and DBL. DBL consisted of three prominent shipwrights Jack O’Driscoll, George Bushe and Dick Leonard working from a small stone shed in Ringaskiddy.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

The Idra 14 is a historic 14.0 ft fractional sloop designed by George O'Brien Kennedy and built by Nunn and Robertson's Boatyard in 1939. With a displacement of 810.0 lb and a beam of 5.0 ft, this vessel represents a specific era of small boat construction, though the exact number of hulls built remains unknown.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for coastal cruising and daysailing, particularly for owners seeking a manageable, lightweight vessel with a max draft of 4.5 ft that allows access to shallow waters.
Bluewater capability:
With a capsize ratio of 2.15 and a displacement of 810.0 lb, the Idra 14 is not designed for offshore bluewater passage-making and is strictly limited to protected coastal waters.
Comparables:
Comparable vessels include other 1930s-1940s fractional sloops of similar length and displacement, such as the Pearson 14 or early O'Day models, which share the role of accessible, trailerable coastal cruisers.
