About the HURLEY 18
Before Hurley Marine went out of business the moulds were sold to Russell Curnow of Penzance, Cornwall who continued to build them up until about 1979. The moulds were then bought by Varne Yachts of Nottingham who were later taken over by Weston Boats who then went out of business in 1986. Over 900 H18s were built altogether. Thanks to Nick Vass and the Hurley Owner Assoc. (site listed above) for images and information about all Hurley models.
Designed by Ian L. Anderson and built by Hurley Marine Ltd (UK) from 1963β1972, the Hurley 18 is a compact, lightweight trailer-sailer with 377 hulls produced. Its low displacement of 2350.0 lb and fin keel configuration prioritize ease of transport and coastal agility over heavy offshore stability.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers, trailer-sailers, and single-handers seeking a manageable, lightweight package for day sailing and short overnight trips. It is ideal for owners who prioritize easy launching and storage over long-range bluewater capability.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 2.01 and a comfort ratio of 18.46, the Hurley 18 is not designed for serious offshore passage-making but is capable of protected coastal cruising. Its light displacement and short waterline limit its seakeeping in heavy weather.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the O'Day 18 and Pearson 18, which share similar dimensions and trailer-sailer roles from the same era. These vessels offer similar masthead sloop rigs and fin keels, targeting the same market of accessible, small-boat ownership.
