About the HANS CHRISTIAN 36
According to varying accounts, the HANS CHRISTIAN 36, MARINER POLARIS, UNION 36, MAO TA 36, and EO 36 are all nearly the same and built by the same yard in Taiwan. (at the time called Union Ship Co.) They are all based on a lengthened version of the HANS CHRISTIAN 34, the boat Bob Perry was originally commissioned to design (though few were built under this name).
Designed by Robert Perry and built by Union Ship Co. (TAIWAN) in 1974, the Hans Christian 36 is a heavy-displacement cutter with a build count of ?. Its 22000.0 lb displacement and 36.83 comfort ratio reflect a design prioritizing seakeeping and stability over speed.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced coastal cruisers and bluewater passagemakers who value robust construction and offshore capability, particularly those willing to manage the maintenance demands of a 1974-era vessel with a 6.0 ft max draft.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a 299.73 D/L ratio, 1.67 capsize ratio, and full/long keel, the Hans Christian 36 is inherently stable and well-suited for offshore passages, though its 6.0 ft max draft limits access to shallow anchorages.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other Robert Perry designs like the Cal 40 or early O'Day 36s due to similar displacement and full-keel characteristics, as well as the Tartan 36 for its era and cutter rig configuration.
