About the GRAND MISTRAL 80
Also known as: Ericsson 80 and Farr Maxi One Design. Farr design #309. Specs above are design specifications. From Wikipedia 2021: Originally developed for Pierre Fehlmann with the intention of creating a one-design round-the-world race. Five yachts were originally built. Mistral built the prototype. At least one we know of was built at Director Yard (ITA) More can be found here: https://www.histoiredeshalfs.com/Maxis%20Monos/Mistral%2080.htm
The Grand Mistral 80 is a rare, high-performance offshore cruiser designed by Bruce Farr and built by Mistral Composites, with only 8 hulls constructed in 1995. Its substantial displacement of 54013.25 lb and beam of 20.34 ft reflect a design prioritizing stability and speed, resulting in a D/L ratio of 67.94.
- Best for:
- This vessel suits experienced offshore cruisers and racers who value Bruce Farr's performance-oriented hull form and are prepared to manage the complexities of a large, specialized composite yacht.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low capsize ratio of 2.16 and significant ballast of 26677.1 lb, the boat is structurally capable of bluewater passage making, though its single-year production run and specific hull issues require careful vetting.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other late-1990s Farr-designed performance cruisers like the Farr 80 or similar large fractional sloop rigs, due to its shared design philosophy and era-specific construction techniques.
