About the GOVERNOR'S CUP 21 (GC-21)
The GOVERNOR'S CUP 21 (or GC-21) was commissioned by and the first 11 were built for the Newport Balboa Sailing and Seamanship Association (NBSSA) as a match racer for the Governor's Cup Match Racing Series, first held in California in 1967.
Designed by Alan Andrews and built by Bravura Yachts Inc. (USA), the Governor's Cup 21 is a rare, lightweight fractional sloop with only 11 hulls built in 2003. Its extremely low displacement of 1670.0 lb and high SA/D ratio of 26.31 indicate a boat designed for rapid acceleration and performance rather than heavy-weather stability.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal day-sailors and trailerable enthusiasts who prioritize speed and ease of handling over long-range cruising comfort. It is ideal for single-handers or couples seeking a responsive, high-performance package for protected waters.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 2.73 and a comfort ratio of 8.29, this boat is not suited for offshore bluewater cruising due to its light displacement and narrow beam. It is best restricted to coastal and inland waters where weather windows are short and shelter is readily available.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include other Alan Andrews designs like the Vision 22 or lightweight trailerables such as the O'Day 23, as they share similar fractional rig configurations and performance-oriented hull forms. The GC-21 distinguishes itself with a significantly lower displacement and narrower beam compared to many contemporaries.
