About the GOLDEN HIND 31
Designed for amateur builder of plywood construction though the majority have been professionally built. New version with fiberglass hull introduced in 1978. Updated version with cutter rig from Golden Hind Marine (GOLDEN HIND 31 MKII) (1992).
Designed by Maurice Griffiths and built by Golden Hind Marine/Newson Boatbuilders, the Golden Hind 31 is a classic 1968-era cruiser with a production run of 250 hulls. Its heavy displacement of 11600.0 lb and twin/triple keel configuration reflect a design philosophy prioritizing stability and seakeeping over speed.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and conservative bluewater travelers who value a heavy, stable platform with ample interior volume for liveaboard comfort. It is well-suited for owners willing to perform diligent maintenance on aging systems rather than those seeking high-performance racing.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 11600.0 lb and a low capsize ratio of 1.59, the Golden Hind 31 demonstrates strong offshore suitability through its heavy, stable hull form and proven design heritage.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Hallberg-Rassy 31 and the Tartan 31, which share similar heavy-displacement characteristics and cruising-oriented layouts from the late 1960s and 1970s. These vessels are comparable due to their emphasis on durability, comfort ratios, and robust construction for offshore passage-making.
