About the FAST 40
Built in Rockland Maine, by North End Marine - Eric White, builder Divinycell sandwich construction. Thanks to Alan Adler for information and updates. From Alan: I wrote an article about Fast-40 in Yachting approx 1981, which attracted 50 letters from people who (like me) wanted a narrow, lightweight yacht. Cape Bay Yachts contacted the 50 and put together the order for 15 boats and ordered a batch from North End. During the run, 3 more customers joined.
Designed by Alan Adler and built by North End Marine, the Fast 40 is a rare, high-performance fractional sloop with only 18 hulls constructed between 1982 and 1983. Its lightweight displacement of 4100.0 lb and high sail area-to-displacement ratio of 29.31 define it as a racing-oriented vessel that demands meticulous maintenance.
- Best for:
- This boat suits experienced sailors seeking a fast, coastal racer-cruiser who are prepared for intensive upkeep, as it is less suited for novice owners or those seeking a low-maintenance bluewater cruiser.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a low displacement of 4100.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 2.0, the Fast 40 is not ideally suited for heavy offshore passages without significant structural reinforcement and careful weather routing.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other 1980s performance cruisers like the O'Day 382 or Pearson 303, but with significantly lower displacement and higher speed potential; however, it lacks the structural robustness of heavier displacement designs like the Cal 40.
