About the FARR 727

Prototype was winner of the Int. 1/4 ton cup(1975). Boats built by Northstar Yachts of Canada, were called the NORTHSTAR 727.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by Bruce Farr and built by Alpha Marine (NZ), the Farr 727 is a lightweight, high-performance racer with only 40 hulls constructed in 1976. Its extreme light displacement of 2690.0 lb and high sail area-to-displacement ratio of 19.49 define its character as a pure racing machine rather than a cruising vessel.

Best for:
This boat is best suited for competitive day racers and club racers who prioritize speed and plan to trailer the vessel, given its low displacement and fin keel design. It is not recommended for novice sailors or those seeking a liveaboard or coastal cruising platform due to its minimal comfort ratio of 11.84.
Bluewater capability:
With a capsize ratio of 2.4 and a comfort ratio of 11.84, the Farr 727 is not designed for offshore bluewater cruising and lacks the stability and reserve buoyancy required for extended offshore passages.
Comparables:
Comparable boats include other late-1970s trailerable racers like the Contender 23 or O'Day 23, which share similar fractional sloop rigs and trailerable footprints. However, the Farr 727 distinguishes itself with a significantly higher performance focus and lower displacement than most production cruisers of that era.
