About the ERICSON 35-2
Called the ERICSON 35-2 by convention as an earlier but relatively rare ERICSON 35 footer (1967?) exists which is an entirely different design, this later version is one of the most successful boats built by Ericson. Shorter Rig option: I: 40.00' / 12.19m J: 14.00' / 4.27m P: 32.70' / 9.97m E: 13.00' / 3.96m SA (100%): 492.55 ft2 / 45.76 m2 (Thanks to 'miatapaul' for providing a corrections concerning this boat.)
Designed by Bruce King and built by Ericson Yachts (USA) from 1969–1981, the Ericson 35-2 is a classic cruising sloop with 500 hulls produced. It is widely recognized for its comfortable interior and robust construction, though owners frequently report structural concerns regarding the deck core and keel attachment.
- Best for:
- This boat suits coastal cruisers and weekend sailors who prioritize interior comfort and ease of handling over high-performance racing. Its moderate displacement and fin keel make it accessible for couples or small families seeking a reliable, traditional cruising experience.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 11600.0 lb and a capsize ratio of 1.77, the Ericson 35-2 is generally considered suitable for coastal and nearshore cruising rather than extreme offshore passages. While many owners have equipped them with watermakers and solar panels for extended trips, the prevalence of keel smile and deck core issues requires rigorous structural verification before attempting bluewater voyages.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the Cal 34 and O'Day 36, which share similar production eras, beam widths, and cruising-oriented designs. These vessels offer similar interior volumes and performance characteristics, making them direct competitors in the used market.
