Designed by Ron Holland and built by Discovery Yachts from 2000–2021, the Discovery 55 is a substantial cruising sloop with a production run of 52 hulls. This data-driven synthesis highlights that while the boat offers robust offshore credentials, owners frequently report critical structural concerns regarding deck cores and rudder systems that require diligent inspection.
- Best for:
- This vessel suits experienced coastal and offshore cruisers who prioritize comfort and range, evidenced by the high prevalence of watermakers, bow thrusters, and solar panel installations among owners.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a displacement of 49604.0 lb, a comfort ratio of 38.57, and a low capsize ratio of 1.71, the Discovery 55 is well-suited for offshore passages, though its fin keel and masthead sloop rig require careful maintenance of the rudder and mast step.
- Comparables:
- Comparable to other large, heavy-displacement cruising sloops from the same era such as the Hallberg-Rassy 53 or Swan 53, due to its similar displacement of 49604.0 lb and focus on bluewater capability over pure racing performance.
