About the CORONADO 23
Similar to the COLUMBIA 22 but with different deck and coach roof. A keel/cb version was also available. Draft (max.) 5.00'/1.52m Draft (min.) 2.56'/0.78m Displacement: 2485 lbs./1127 kgs. Ballast: 810 lbs./367 kgs. Later offered as SAILCRAFTER 23.(sail-away or kit) A new CORONADO 23 (listed here as CORONADO 23-2) was introduced in 1974 which is an entirely different design.
Designed by William Crealock and built by Coronado Yachts (USA) from 1969–1973, the Coronado 23 is a compact, performance-oriented trailer sailer. With a displacement of 2300.0 lb and a masthead sloop rig, it offers a lightweight, responsive sailing experience, though the exact number of hulls built remains unconfirmed in available records.
- Best for:
- This boat is ideal for coastal cruisers, weekend warriors, and trailer-sailing enthusiasts who prioritize ease of transport and storage over long-term offshore endurance. Its light displacement and shallow draft make it well-suited for shallow-water cruising and single-handing.
- Bluewater capability:
- With a capsize ratio of 2.35 and a comfort ratio of 11.15, the Coronado 23 is not designed for serious bluewater passages, as its light displacement of 2300.0 lb and fin keel prioritize speed and trailering over heavy-weather stability.
- Comparables:
- Comparable boats include the O'Day 23 and the Pearson 22, which share similar era, trailer-sailing utility, and fractional or masthead sloop rigs. These designs also emphasize light displacement and ease of handling for short-range coastal cruising.
