About the COMPETITION 1000

Intended as IOR 1/2 ton racer. A strip planked prototype also came from this builder. Sven Svendsen's Boat Works was located at Alameda, CA. We have not seen any reliable documentation from the designer or builder. Dimensions shown were reported in Boating Magazine, July-August 1974.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by Alan Gurney and built by Sven Svendsen's Boat Works(USA), the Competition 1000 is a rare 28.67 ft masthead sloop with only 6 hulls built between 1973–1975. Its scarcity and specific build count make it a unique collector's item rather than a mass-produced cruiser.

Best for:
This boat suits experienced sailors seeking a lightweight, performance-oriented coastal racer with a high SA/D ratio of 17.92, rather than those prioritizing heavy bluewater comfort.
Bluewater capability:
With a low D/L ratio of 262.85 and a capsize ratio of 2.0, the boat is designed for performance and coastal racing rather than heavy offshore passage making.
Comparables:
Comparable to other Alan Gurney designs from the early 1970s that prioritize speed and handling over interior volume, such as the Gurney 30 or similar fin-keeled racers of the era.
