About the COLUMBIA 29

(S&S #1501) The original mold and first hulls (1-4?) were built, almost singlehandedly by Larry Waters. (1960?). The person financing the project apparently lost interest and the tooling ended up in the hands of Glas Laminates, (later Columbia Yachts). It became one of their signature models. A raised deck version was introduced in 1963 called the COLUMBIA 29 DEFENDER. In 1965 there was a styling change with a new more streamlined deck and coach roof. (COLUMBIA 29 MKII). Delivered with outboard well or optional gas inboard engine.

Sailpages Buyer's Take

Designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Columbia Yachts (USA) from 1961–1965, the Columbia 29 is a classic full-keel sloop with a displacement of 7400.0 lb and a comfort ratio of 29.49. While specific hull production numbers are unverified, the fleet is characterized by its robust construction and traditional layout, though owners frequently report structural concerns regarding the keel and deck.

Best for:
This boat suits coastal cruisers and traditionalists who prioritize seakindliness and comfort over high-speed performance, particularly those willing to undertake significant maintenance on aging fiberglass and mechanical systems.
Bluewater capability:
With a capsize ratio of 1.64 and a D/L ratio of 290.03, the Columbia 29 possesses strong inherent stability and heavy displacement suitable for offshore passages, provided critical structural integrity issues like keel smiles and rudder shafts are addressed.
Comparables:
Comparable to other Sparkman & Stephens designs from the early 1960s such as the Columbia 26 or 33, as well as the Pearson 28, due to similar full-keel configurations, displacement ranges, and emphasis on offshore stability over planing capability.
